Tonye Membere-Otaji’s idea focused on trade imbalances as well as trade finance inadequacies across the African continent. It was instructive to learn that for every 10 containers imported into Nigeria, Africa, nine of such containers are exported empty. In other words, 90% of shipping containers leaving Africa to other parts of the world, are leaving without cargo.

The presentation provided new perspectives about Africa’s approach to global trade and how Africa can win by getting its products to the international market and easing access to trade finance opportunities for entrepreneurs and startups.

Tonye Membere-Otaji is the founder and CEO of MVX. A startup that’s changing the freight forwarding and trade finance space with the help of technology.

Before MVX, he led the Strategy and Commercial divisions of Elshcon, a maritime logistics and engineering company. Prior to that, Tonye was Co-founder & Creative Director of Membere and Longe, a design and technology agency.

His passion for the blue economy and the role it plays in economic development is the inspiration behind MVX. And the goal is to drive the seamless movement of maritime trade logistics on the African continent.

Tonye enjoys DJing and unsurprisingly is the founder of KrosFade, a curated DJ mix booking platform. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
