Most people when they think of communication think of language, however day to day actions, visual cues, and gestures are also forms of communication we heavily rely on—sometimes without being conscious of it. Language is not the only way to understand one another, in fact focusing on these other forms of communication shaped by the different cultures we come from can bridge barriers and reveal more about the identities. The different mosaics that make up each person should be celebrated. By examining the varying perspectives, values, and cultures as a whole we can learn to embrace differences and see them not as a point of division but instead a point of connection. Madeline Poole lives in Western Massachusetts and will be graduating high school May of 2021. She will be attending college in the fall where she hopes to major in Global affairs and Psychology or Neuroscience. Madeline wants to continue learning the French language, delving deeper into international relations, and examining the different ways we interact across cultures. Communication is an integral human quality that is continuously fascinating, and she hopes her talk and personal experience enables people to re-think the ways in which their identities are a mosaic of their surroundings, and how the way they move through the world can speak more than words. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
